To quote Mets.com, it was a tale of 2 outings for Mets rookie Jeremy Hefner. As I posted earlier today, I was extremely excited to see Hefner make his first career start tonight after pitching 8 innings in relief this year. Tonights game started out with a drizzle which would eventually make its way to a steady downpour.
Before the downpour began, Hefner pitched an impressive 2 innings, giving up just one lone hit in the top of the 2nd and that was all. It was looking good for Hefner’s first start, and then the rain came. The Mets and Padres would sit through a 68 minute rain delay after Hefner struck out to end the 2nd inning and the Mets would have a 1-0 lead going into the delay. After the rain stopped and the tarp was removed, the game would resume, and the 2nd half to Hefner’s night would begin.
The top of the 3rd started with a double, then a ground out by the pitcher Eric Stults, followed by 4 more consecutive hits to give the Padres a 4-1 lead. Hefner would strike out the next 2 batters to end the top of the 3rd.
Hefner’s night would end after giving up 3 more hits and 2 more runs in the 4th, finishing his night going 3.2 innings allowing 9 hits and 6 earned runs and 3 strikeouts. Ramon Ramirez would relieve Hefner in the 4th.
Despite tonights blowout loss, there were a few bright sides, including another excellent night by David Wright who went 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 RBI’s. Wright’s average on the season moves up to .405 and his OBP is an even .500.
Another bright side was seeing Ike Davis pinch hitting for Vinny Rottino in the 8th inning. Terry Collins made it clear today that Davis would not be demoted to AAA-Buffalo, and Ike thanked Collins with a 2 RBI single to right field. The even better piece of that was that Ike saw 7 pitches in the at bat which is a big improvement from what we’ve been seeing from him. Hopefully this can give him some much needed confidence.
