on

The Mets and Cubs have some history

The Mets look to rebound after last nigh’t loss to the Cubs that saw New York stage a comeback that fell a run shy of beating their former division rivals. The Mets send Dillon Gee to the mound for his last start of the first half of the season, he is opposed Jeff Samardzija.

Today’s game can be seen on SNY with Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez, and heard on the radio with Howie Rose and Josh Lewin with first pitch slated for 4:10 p.m.

Mets Lineup                                                         Cubs Lineup

The Mets change up the lineup with Daniel Murphy and Ike Davis back in as well as Josh Thole and Jordany Valdespin who hit his third career home run yesterday. Davis, Murphy and Ruben Tejada are the only players with multi-hit games against Samardzija, that includes one of Murphy’s two home runs at Wrigley Field not too long ago.

Meanwhile Chicago has both of the All Stars back in the lineup with Starlin Castro at shortstop and batting second while Bryan LaHair is batting fifth and in right field. No one in the Cubs’ lineup has more than two hits, but then again no player has more than six at bats against Gee, Alfonso Soriano has a bases clearing double against Gee in three at bats.

Pitching Matchup

Dillon Gee (5-7; 4.34 ERA) is coming off of loses in each of his past two starts and four of his last five. His last start in Los Angeles saw Gee allow a pair of runs on five hits in six innings pitched. He also started against the Cubs in Chicago and took a loss after allowing four runs on nine hits.

Jeff Samardzija (6-7; 4.77 ERA) is also on a one win in five starts stretch but his win came in his last start in Atlanta in which he allowed one run on four hits over seven innings while striking out a season-high 11.

This Day In Mets History

2007: The Mets won a 17-inning game in Houston in a game that saw 16 different pitchers used. Tom Glavine started for the Mets followed by Aaron Heilman, Pedro Feliciano, Guillermo Mota, Scott Schoeneweis, Joe Smith, eventual winner Aaron Sele followed by Billy Wagner who picked up the save.

2002: Jay Payton, yes Jay Payton had a five RBI game against the Florida Marlins on three hits to help the Mets beat the fish by a 9-3 score.

2001: The Mets and Yankees were involved in an epic pitcher’s dual between Kevin Appier and Mike Mussina, who woulda thought? Against Mariano Rivera in the top of the 10th inning, Rivera got the first two outs quickly but Desi Relaford, Edgardo Alfonzo, Mike Piazza, Timo Perez and Todd Zeile all reached as the Mets took a 3-0 lead which was sealed by Armando Benitez.

Happy Birthday to Tim Teufel!
