On Monday, June 29, Ruben Tejada was scheduled for an autograph signing at Fox and Hound with fans, but he was nowhere to be found.
Understandably, the promoter was not too happy with the Mets’ light-hitting shortstop, and he posted the series of events on his website.
Here’s a clip:
A paid driver was sent to [Tejada’s] location in Flushing, NY and was there at 5 p.m. for the 5:30 p.m. pickup as instructed by the agent. At 5:45 p.m., the driver called saying Ruben was not down. The promoters called his agent and was told he would be down in a minute. Constant calls went on back and forth till approximately 6:45 p.m. when we where told he was not coming as his newborn kid was sick and in the hospital. I informed the agent that I was to inform the press of this. He told [me] not to and that he might be at the doctor’s office. I then contacted the paid driver to return home as it was canceled.
The fans were given full refunds and the Fox and Hound gave out coupons for customers’ troubles as well. There was even a kid there with a cast who was crying because he wanted Tejada to sign it.
This is not exactly the PR the Mets are looking for. To read the entire story from the horse’s mouth, click here.
