Save The Stache: Keith’s Facial Hair May Be History Soon

When Keith Hernandez announced on SNY last week that he was seriously considering shaving off his famous facial hair, many responded unfavorably for something that’s been a signature for the Mets’ icon and an inspiration for this blog’s creation.

In the meantime, Chris Vaccaro,  a former colleague of mine at Patch, started a petition to “Save the Stache.”

“Keith Hernandez’s mustache is a cultural icon,” Vaccaro said. “It was there when the Mets won the World Series in 1986. It was there when you were a child and you were an adult. It’s turned heads, it’s kissed babies, it’s made you laugh and cry. It’s a part of you. It’s your mustache just as much as Keith’s.”

As of Wednesday at 5 p.m., 14 signatures (including yours truly) were on the petition. The goal is to accumulate 171,703 more. No word on how Vaccaro came up with that number.

“I don’t want to draw attention to it,” Hernandez told Richard Sandomir of The New York Times. “I’ll do it, and whoever’s watching the game will see it.”

“Let’s hope not,” Vaccaro said. “Sign the petition and SAVE THE STACHE!”
