When Scott Hairston went into the off-season after his first year with the Mets last season, the club was not shy regarding its willingness to bring him ba
During blogger day at Citi Field on Wednesday, the Daily Stache spoke to Hairston regarding his decision to re-sign with the Mets and also what it means to lose a guy like Jason Bay to the disabled list.
“I wanted to sign with the team that wanted me,” Hairston said. “They made that known early in the off-season.”
That made the odds of him signing with the Mets increase. Speaking off odds, check out sports betting sites here.
Hairston admitted that it doesn’t hurt that Sandy Alderson is in Queens, especially since the two have a working relationship going back to their days together in San Diego. His role is to come up against lefties, and he has been splitting time with guys like Mike Baxter, Jordany Valdespin and others since Jason Bay went down with a fractured rib.
“It’s so hard to lose anybody,” Hairston said. “But for Jason Bay, he works his tail off out there, and he’s made a lot of great plays. Hopefully it’s something that won’t keep him out too long.”
Last night, Hairston worked a good at-bat in a pivotal spot during the meltdown of a ninth inning for Heath Bell, and he grounded into a fielder’s choice before Kirk Nieuenhuis ended the game with a long walk-off single. Hairston, who has gotten his at-bats the last few games, will not be getting used to that with the pending return of Andres Torres on the road-trip. Hopefully, Torres will be able to stick with the team for more than a few innings, but with the way Nieuenhuis has played, he’s likely to be in left field.
Either way, it’s nice to have like Hairston ready to go on the bench.
