Struggling Veterans Come Up Clutch

on

The Mets were able to salvage the final game of their series against the Giants on Thursday, a win they needed in the worst way possible. The victory was due in large part to two Mets who have struggled this season, Curtis Granderson and Michael Cuddyer.

Coming into the game Granderson had been hitting a paltry .237, and Cuddyer not much better at .267. Overall, it has been a disappointing season for the Mets past two big free agents. In addition to their below career-average numbers, the two have constantly come up short in RBI situations.

With these struggles in mind, it was certainly refreshing to see the two come up big. Cuddyer had his first big hit in the fifth inning, slashing a double the opposite way to score Granderson and give the Mets their first lead of the game. When the Giants jumped back out in front in the sixth, Granderson answered back with an RBI single in the seventh to tie the game. With the game still tied in the ninth it was Cuddyer who got the 2-out walk off hit to score Granderson.

Cuddyer’s last walk off hit came over nine years and two teams ago. The 36-year-old has hit safely in 15 his last 17 games with a .338 average over that span.

Hopefully both Cuddyer and Granderson can build off Thursday’s clutch performances. The Mets need big production from the two of them down the stretch if they hope to be competitive down the stretch.
