What a week for our New York Mets.
A week ago sitting in this very spot on deadline day it looked like it would be a lost season. Cespedes arrived and there was a lot of excitement, a man that knows how to hit in the lineup. What should have also been on fans mind, 6 games against the division. If you remember back to the magical 11 game win streak it included 11 games against the NL East. As the Mets arrive in Tampa to take on the Rays, they are coming in on a 6 game win streak, their second longest of the season, all 6 against the division.
The last time the Mets had a winning record against their own division was also the last time they finished with a winning record, 2008. As we sit here August 7 there is only one team in Major League Baseball with 30 wins against its own division and its the team from Queens. The Mets have more then half their wins in division play and it will be tough from here on out in August as they only play 5 games against the Phillies out of 23 total games.
If the Mets can get through that stretch unscathed they get to play the worst division in baseball, by record, in all but seven games in September and October. If the Mets want to make the playoffs, this year would be a great opportunity totake advantage of the weak division they play in.
