The Best Team in New York…At Least for One Day

on

I figure we’re not going to have a lot of reasons to smile when it comes to comparing the Mets and Yankees this year, so I will take it when I can get it.

Not only did Carlos Pena hit a grand slam off of one of the Pitching Machines C.C. Sabathia and a game-winning single against Mariano Rivera, he’s on my fantasy team, so that makes it extra sweet. Raul Ibanez did drive in four runs though, and I think he has scary potential with all of the protection in that lineup. Do you think Yankees fans will be calling in to Mike Francesa and demanding Rivera be pulled from the closer’s role? Some lunatic will call, but I think the Yankees are happy with their closer.

Every year, I like to look at the Mets versus Yankees position by position to see where we stack up, so without further adieu, here we go.

First Base: Ike Davis vs. Mark Teixeira, Advantage: Yankees

Second Base: Robinson Cano vs. Daniel Murphy, Advantage: Yankees

Third Base: David Wright vs. Alex Rodriguez, Advantage: Mets

Shortstop: Ruben Tejada vs. Derek Jeter, Advantage: Yankees

Left Field: Jason Bay vs. Brett Gardner, Advantage: Yankees

Center Field: Insert Name Here vs. Curtis Granderson, Advantage Yankees

Right Field: Lucas Duda vs. Nick Swisher, Advantage: Even

Starting Pitching: Sabathia, Kuroda, Nova, Garcia, Hughes vs. Santana, Pelfrey, Dickey, Gee, Niese, Advantage: Even

Relief Pitching: Soriano, Logan, Robertson, Wade, Rapada, Felps vs. Ramirez, Rauch, Byrdak, Parnell, Acosta, Batista, Advantage: Mets

Closer: Rivera vs. Francisco, Advantage: Yankees

Overall: Advantage: Yankees, but it’s closer than most think.
