“Harvey Day” is something many of us have been celebrating since Matt Harvey’s very first start last season and the idea has taken on a life of it’s own.
With that in mind, I came up with this poem on a whim Tuesday night. It is set (obviously) to the rhythm and tone of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” and should be read as you tucked your kids into bed on Harveve. I hope you all enjoy it!
Twas the night before Harvey Day when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even @jay_horwitzpr

The jerseys were hung by the lockers with care, in hopes that @mattharvey33soon would be there.

The Mets fans were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of strikeouts danced in their heads.

And Ma in her Mets PJ’s and I in my Mets cap, had just settled down to watch Geico Sportsnite.

When out by the field there arose such a roar, I sprang from the couch to see what was in store.
— d’evON (@DevOnSports) April 24, 2013
Away to the fire escape, I flew like Jordany, tore open the window and what the hell is a sash?
— d’evON (@DevOnSports) April 24, 2013
When what to my wondering eyes should appear? But a big righty on the hill and eight New York fielders.

With a high 90’s fastball and a slider so slick, I knew in a moment it must be Matt Harvey!

W A Y behind Wheeler, his critics they claimed. But he brushed off his shoulders and called each fielder by name.

Now Davis, Now Murphy, Now Wright and Tejada. On Duda, On Valdy, On Byrd and John Buck.

Back to the warning track, Back to the wall. Slug doubles, slug triples, slug homers and all.

As empty bags and wrappers in the Flushing night fly. Each fielder shall get a hit to back up their guy.
— d’evON (@DevOnSports) April 24, 2013
So up to the stadium the players, they flew. With their gloves and their bats and Matt Harvey too.
— d’evON (@DevOnSports) April 24, 2013
And then, in an instant, I heard on the field, the scraping and scratching of each player’s cleat.
— d’evON (@DevOnSports) April 24, 2013
As I rushed by an usher and headed to my seat, onto the field came Matt Harvey with a confident stride.

He was dressed in blue and orange, from his head to his foot. And his jersey looked spotless in the Citi Field light.
— d’evON (@DevOnSports) April 24, 2013
The number 33, he had on his back and he looked like an ace, just entering his prime.
— d’evON (@DevOnSports) April 24, 2013
His eyes were intense, his glare downright scary. His game face was on and each hitter be wary.
— d’evON (@DevOnSports) April 24, 2013
He pawed at the rubber with the tip of his cleat, and dug up a spot to place each of his feet.
— d’evON (@DevOnSports) April 24, 2013
Each warmup toss hummed and smacked John Buck’s glove. And the buzz at Citi Field was a sign of adoration and love.
— d’evON (@DevOnSports) April 24, 2013
He had a menacing windup and fired each strike. Onlookers couldn’t help but compare him to Dwight.
— d’evON (@DevOnSports) April 24, 2013
He was confident and calm as he circled the mound. And the team felt more confident too, just having him around.
— d’evON (@DevOnSports) April 24, 2013
With one final fastball he gave fans a rise. Soon in stepped a hitter to meet his demise.
— d’evON (@DevOnSports) April 24, 2013
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work. And mowed down each batter as they thought “what a jerk!”
— d’evON (@DevOnSports) April 24, 2013
He pitched into the seventh, then the eighth, then the ninth. There’d be no need for the bullpen, thank goodness for that.
— d’evON (@DevOnSports) April 24, 2013
The crowd rose to its feet, he needed one final out. He went to the slider and got his man swinging, no doubt.
— d’evON (@DevOnSports) April 24, 2013
He pumped his fist and hugged Buck, then I heard him exclaim “Happy Harvey Day to all, and to all a good-night!”
