Don’t rush Harvey! Don’t rush Wheeler! That’s all we keep hearing from EVERYONE. But what about the guy who was close to the top of everyone’s list last year as far as Mets prospects go? Jenrry Mejia.
Jenrry Mejia underwent Tommy John surgery 12 months ago and has been rehabbing in the minor leagues so far this season. His numbers have looked pretty good overall. 25 innings pitched, 20 hits, 10 runs (3.60 ERA), 18 k’s and only 6 walks.
But why does it seem like he is being rushed up here? Is it just to provide middle relief for the big club? All we’ve heard from the Mets brass is that they aren’t looking to rush any of the young prospects along. But what’s the point on bringing back Mejia so soon? What makes him different? To me this just doesn’t make any sense.
The Mets are clearly building for 2013 and beyond. Anything above.500 this year is icing on the cake. So why not let Mejia spend untill September 1st in AAA building up his arm? I’m not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV, but I can only imagine that pitching every other day in the bullpen is not a good way to build up strength in the muscles around the ligament of a surgically repaired elbow.
I hope that many other Mets fans have the same opinion as I have. It seems to be the only logical way to bring back Mejia. There’s no question that he has electric stuff, but at only 22 yrs old, what’s the point of possibly derailing is progress to throw 20 meaningless innings in a mop up role in the Mets bullpen.
Stay the course. Please!
