It’s 1:30 a.m. on a Tuesday morning, and I am vacationing in Florida, but rather than get a good night’s sleep to prepare for a day of fun tomorrow, I hopped online to weigh in on the trade of Troy Tulowitzki and LaTroy Hawkins to the Blue Jays for former Met Jose Reyes and minor leaguers.

Now, why would I be reporting a non Mets-related trade? Well, there are a number of implications on #MetsTwitter, the fanbase and the team as a whole. First of all, we can stop with the love fest. The Mets allegedly reached out to Colorado, but an agreement could not be reached, and it never seemed like Sandy Alderson’s plan included adding an expensive shortstop who’s proven to be injury prone. Sure, he’s all-world when he’s healthy, but he’s not dependable to play a majority of the season.

The other interesting part of this deal is Jose Reyes going the other way. In my mind, I think Colorado will look to flip him elsewhere. He doesn’t make sense to be included in what now is clearly a rebuild in Colorado? Enter Mets? The biggest hole on this team for a while has been shortstop and power in the outfield, and while Jose would not fill the power void, he’d be a perfect lead-off hitter and provide some much-needed speed that the Mets are clearly lacking.
This has been a fun trade season, and all things considered, this trade could have some implications, even if Reyes doesn’t end up wearing orange and blue once again. The thought of Tulowitzki’s bat throwing a crimp into the Yankees’ plan makes me smile as well.
