David Wright has been a hot topic of conversation this season, mainly due to his back issues and his ability to play everyday without getting hurt. There’s no doubt that Wright’s production has dipped significantly in the last couple of seasons, and his Spinal Stenosis is a key contributor to that.
Early on, Wright has been strangely efficient. He’s reached base safely in 19 consecutive games, the third longest active streak in the Majors. Only the Braves Nick Markakis (24 games) and the Royals Erick Hosmer (20 games) have better numbers.
In 9 games and 33 at-bats, Wright is hitting .273 with a .429 on-base percentage batting in the number two hole. While those numbers are certainly better than expected, albeit early in the season, Wright has yet to register a home run or an RBI, which is downright weird. The days of him being a big run-producer are all but gone, and he’s now become a table-settler. While it’s not sexy, David has always been good at getting on base, even when hampered by injuries. With the development of Michael Conforto, followed by Yoenis Cespedes and Lucas Duda, Wright needs to get on to give the big boppers a chance to drive him in.
While he may not be the big home run hitter or the gold-glove third baseman anymore, Wright is still very valuable to the Mets. I hardly expect him to maintain a .429 OBP, but he should continue to set the table for the Mets. Hopefully, the big boys behind him get the job done, and the Mets will be just fine.
