Kudos to Brian Wright (no relation to David I think) for the heads up, but ESPN will be airing the first Mets game after Sept. 11, 2001 tonight at 7 p.m.
I happened to have tickets to the game, although at 13 I was a little too young to fully appreciate the significance of what I was witnessing. You can feel the nervousness of the crowd and the importance in the air. You could sense the healing that was taking place.
The night featured appearances by then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani, celebrities Diana Ross and Liza Minnelli, and a home run that “gave New York something to smile about,” as the great Howie Rose said. Tune to ESPN at 7 p.m. and enjoy the video above.
