The Atlanta Braves are intrested in Cuban infielder Hector Olivera.
Olivera’s primary position is second base and the Braves sure could use a second baseman. Last season the Braves cut Dan Uggla and Tommy LaStella got the bulk of the starts with Phil Gosselin getting some as well. This would be an upgrade if the Braves could land Olivera.
Like a lot of other Cubans that are in the league right now, you could find a hidden gem or simply a bust. Olivera is 29 years old and played 10 seasons in Cuba. He hit .323/.407/.505 in Cuba. Not knowing what you can get, you can run the risk of overpaying for a player that has not played a single inning in the MLB.
Sure he is a stud playing in Cuba but it is a whole different ballgame playing with the best of the best. Olivera’s representitive said to expect a deal worth around 70 million per MLBTradeRumors. Olivera has also had a history with injuries, as he’s injured his UCL before. Paying that much is a big risk the Braves are going to have to make a decision on but might be worth it in the long-run.
