The Opening Ceremonies for the 2016 Summer Olympics will take place tonight in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Mets have several Olympic ties.
- Mets first base coach Tom Goodwin was a member of the 1988 Gold Medal winning USA Olympic baseball team in Seoul, South Korea. Goodwin scored three times in five games during the Olympic tournament.
- Michael Conforto’s mother, Tracie Ruiz-Conforto, won two gold medals in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and a silver in the 1988 Games in Seoul in synchronized swimming. She was dubbed the first queen of synchronized swimming and was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
