Addison Reed was acquired on August 30th, last year during the waiver trade deadline period as a low risk, high reward option. The Mets’ intentions with Reed at the time were for him to hopefully have success in the 7th inning, with Tyler Clippard in the 8th, and Jeurys Familia in the 9th.
Reed was acquired for two prospects, RHPs Miller Diaz and Matt Koch. Koch is now ranked the Diamondbacks 20th best prospect and has just recently been promoted to AAA after posting a 4.70 ERA in 74.2 IP in AA. Diaz was converted to a reliever in the Diamondbacks organization and has only started 3 games for the Diamondbacks organization. Diaz posted a 6.00 ERA in the California League, which is A+ ball. However, Diaz was promoted to AA and has a 1.93 ERA in 7 games.
Addison Reed appeared in 17 games for the Mets in 2015 and posted a 1.17 ERA. Reed was seen as a potential non-tender candidate when they initially acquired him in August. Reed was arbitration eligible this past offseason and agreed to a 1 year/ 5.3 million dollar deal. Now at this point of the season, many say that Reed has been the best acquisition in the Sandy Alderson tenure.
Addison Reed set the franchise single-season record with 27 holds after a hold against the Yankees on August 5th. Reed broke Aaron Heilman’s record of 26 holds last might, with a full two months to go in the season and will shatter that record barring injury. The 27 holds that Reed has ties Dellin Betances for the most holds in the majors, who is now the closer for the Yankees so Reed will most likely take the lead rather shortly in that category. Reed, with a 1.88 ERA is ranked 4th amongst NL relievers. Reed is tied 5th amongst NL relievers with 67 strikeouts.
Reed has a 11.57 K/9 in the NL, which ranks 6th amongst NL relievers. Reed has a 0.86 WHIP which 4th best among NL relievers. The importance of Reed is undeniable at this point for this club, and has proved essential for a club that can’t afford to lose games because of just abysmal offense to this point in the season.
