Would You Trade Curtis Granderson to Retain Yoenis Cespedes?

on

Let me start by saying my answer to this question is a whole-hearted no.

I know Grandy is on the back nine of his career, but he was arguably the offensive MVP for the Mets in 2015. Let’s look at the stats. He hit .259 with a .364 OBP while adding 26 homers and 70 RBI from the leadoff spot. He set the tone and was a key cog for the Mets pennant-winning run in 2015.

I had a disagreement with @RisingAppleBlog on Twitter when they suggested that the Mets deal Granderson for relief help and prospects to create room for Cespedes. Yoenis, while extremely valuable down the stretch last season, is arguably not a super upgrade from Granderson. And with his tendencies to make boneheaded plays and with his work ethic repeatedly being questioned, I just simply wouldn’t make the move.

Here were Cespedes’ stats as a Met: In 57 games, Cespedes hit 17 homers and drove in 44 runs. He hit 14 doubles and four triples while hitting .287 with a .337 OBP.

I think we all need to come to terms with the truth. Yoenis Cespedes was a great trade deadline addition, but he’s not going to be a Met in 2016. The Mets are in a similar position as last season, and if they’re missing one bat at the deadline while on the cusp of something special, management will be forced to make a move, just like they did last season.

I believe in the Mets, mostly because of the pitching, but the offense won’t be as bad as people think. Instead of a big thumper like Cespedes, the Mets will have to be an equal sum of parts, with Granderson, Michal Conforto, Travis d’Arnaud, Lucas Duda, David Wright, Asdrubal Cabrera and Neil Walker playing pivotal roles.

I honestly like the formula. I know it puts me in the minority, but so be it.
