Zack Wheeler Hopes to Crush Bryce Harper’s Dreams

on

When the Nationals announced that they signed Max Scherzer to a ridiculous 7-year, $210 million contract, he posted the following Tweet that certainly caught the attention of the Mets.

“Give me my ring,” Harper tweeted.

One Met in particular, Zack Wheeler, had a problem with that.

“I guarantee you we all saw what Bryce Harper said,’ ” Wheeler said. “He said, ‘give me my ring.’ We’re going to make it hard for him to get that ring, I’ll guarantee you that.”

Last year, the Mets lost 15 of the 19 games they played against each other, and despite the Mets’ seemingly stellar rotation, they’ll be facing Scherzer, Gio Gonzalez, Jordan Zimmermann, Stephen Strasburg and Doug Fister. Tanner Roark, who could be a number two or three pitcher on any other team, will open the season in the bullpen.

PS, the Mets regular season starts in Washington on April 6.

Much like Matt Cerrone said on MetsBlog earlier today, I like the fire the Mets are showing early in camp. Whether it’s Bobby Parnell and David Wright teaching a rookie like Noah Syndergaard a lesson earlier in camp, or Wheeler taking a stand against a division rival, it’s nice to expect to win.

Optimism is brewing in Queens, and despite this season likely being about a fight for one of the Wild Card spots, anything can happen. That’s the beauty of baseball.
