Wright Keeps Raking as Mets Crush Fish

on

Following a heartbreaking loss on Friday night, the Mets were right back at it on Saturday afternoon, with R.A. Dickey looking to right the wrongs of a lost evening in Miami.

But it was the New York offense that ruled the day. Four Mets reached base at least three times and the 3-4-5 hitters went 10-for-16 with four runs batted in and four runs scored, led by David Wright. Wright was 4-for-6 with a homer and three RBI as New York piled up nine runs on the way to a 9-3 victory over Miami.

Dickey was far from dominant in his six innings — the first was his only 1-2-3 frame — allowing two earned runs on nine hits. He walked one and didn’t strike out a single batter. But it was plenty good enough thanks to an outpouring of run support.

Ricky Nolasco gave the Mets a head start in the first, walking Andres Torres and Kirk Nieuwenhuis to start the game. Wright made him pay with an RBI single to left, plating the first run of the afternoon. The Marlins evened the score against Dickey in the second on three straight singles to start the inning.

But as a Gaby Sanchez hit forced Miami’s first run across, the Marlins were busy squandering an opportunity for more. Giancarlo Stanton got caught in a rundown and was tagged out by Dickey at third for the first out. RA got the next two to exit the second without further damage. Dickey danced around trouble all day, leaving six on base over six innings, including three in scoring position. The Marlins also made two unforced outs at third thanks to fine plays by Dickey.

The Mets took the lead for good in the third and kept piling on from there, scoring at least one run in each of the next four innings. Wright untied the score in the third with an opposite field solo blast to left. In the fourth, New York got some assistance from Miami’s catcher Brett Hayes, who interfered with the swing of Andres Torres with two on and two outs, negating a fly out to end the inning. Torres was awarded first to load the bases and Nieuwenhuis followed with a single to chase home Ronny Cedeno with the fourth Mets run.

The offense took advantage of Miami’s misgivings for three more runs with two outs in the fifth. Lucas Duda and Daniel Murphy got it started with nobody out, knocking back-to-back singles off Ricky Nolasco. Nolasco got the next two outs on ground balls from Ike Davis and Cedeno, but he followed by plunking Mike Nickeas and Dickey back-to-back to force in the fifth Mets run. Torres tacked on two more runs with a single to right that scored Cedeno and Nickeas to make it 6-1 and end Nolasco’s day.

Three consecutive singles in the sixth plated the Mets’ seventh run as Murphy followed hits by Wright and Duda with a liner to left, driving Wright home with run No. 7. The Marlins finally broke through for a second run off Dickey in the sixth, as Stanton drove in Morrison and they added another in the seventh off Manny Acosta. But the Mets answered with runs in the eighth and ninth to cruise to the six-run win.

Turning Point: The number two. The Mets were clinging to a two-run lead with two on and two out in the fifth when Nolasco lost control, hitting two straight batters to force in a run. Andres Torres then came through with a seeing-eye single to drive in two and make it a five-run game.

Game Ball: David Wright is playing some incredible baseball. The league’s leading hitter, Wright had four hits today to raise his average above .400. He also knocked in three runs and blasted his fifth career homer of Nolasco, his most off any hurler in baseball. Is that contract drawn up yet, Sandy?

Random Stache Moment: Jose Reyes has four hits today and nobody cared.

Next Game: The Mets and the Marlins play the rubber game of their three-game set on Sunday afternoon in Miami. Jon Niese (2-1, 4.01 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 29 K) takes the hill for the Mets looking to get back on track after two straight below average starts. He’ll be opposed by Carlos Zambrano (1-2, 1.98 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 32K), who has been great for the Marlins so far this year. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. and the game can be seen on PIX, or heard, as always on WFAN 660AM.
